Thattekad Bird Sanctuary

I wish to narrate my first journey to Thattekad (World famous Salim ali bird sactuary situated there). It was on February 2003 while studying Computer Engineering Diploma in Govt: Polytechnic,Kothamangalam.Thattekad very near to our college so we planned to go there. We (around fifteen members) started our journey at 10.30 am by local line bus and reached there at 11.30 am.Deep forest situated near to Periyaar reiver and there is no bridge to cross. So we have approached "Changadam" (It seems like boat, combination of two or three small boats bind togethre) to cross the Periyar river.Travel by "Changadam" through river was a fantastic experience. We felt the smell of river and beaty of nature.

There was a small Zoo for visitors. You can get Zoo ticket by giving amount of Rs/- 20.Wide variety of animals like snakes, birds, rats, rabbits etc are there. After that we walked through the forest for bit longer. It was an amazing experience in my life.We met with an Elephant along the way but luckly escaped from him.We spent almost whole day there and return at 3.30 pm from there.

Note:- If you are planning to visit Thattekad bird sanctury then arrange your travel to reach there early morning then only you can get time to visit forest.

Trip To Bhoothathankettu...

I travel a lot... Mostly with my friends.... And i forget about everything. Now this is a page in my travel diary....Bhoothathankettu is the part of ever green forest in kerala,Ernakulam dist. The journey is too good.... Through the forest and bank of "Periyar" River ... You can walk through the forest and enjoy the beauty of nature....It is situated in the village of Pindimana, about 10 km away from the town of Kothamangalam and 50 km away from the main city of Ernakulam.A scenic dam site with boating facilities is situated in a vast virgin forest. It is a popular picnic spot.

It is connected to the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, where visitors can see different varieties of birds and animals. The Idamalayar reservoir is about 12 km distance from the site. There is no railway access to the site; access to the site is through the greenish and thick forest. At the time of Malayatoor pilgrim season, travellers use the roads through the forest.
Large blocks of unshaped stones are placed on both sides of the Periyar River to form the dam, making it look like a natural dam built by superhumans. The name Bhoothathan Kettu, means "monster dam"; past generations believed it was built by a Bhootham (monster).
How to Reach:
Nearest railway station: Aluva Railway Station, about 50 km away.
Nearest airport: Kochi international airport about 26 km from Ernakulam town
.

Remember one thing if you travel to Bhoothathankettu... U have long way to walk... so fixed one day of walk with food.
